If Dad Ain't Respected .........

This blog is not about marriage or parenting, but I have noticed a media trend as have several of you. It seems that it is open season on adult men. Many television shows as well as numerous commercials take cheap shots at the guys in our lives, and I must admit it is bothersome to me as a wife and mom of young adult men.

Do you remember having heard the saying "If momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy"? We all know there is some truth to that statement! Well I think we can say that " If Daddy ain't respected, ain't nobody respected"! Our men deserve respect, and as Christians we should lead the way in how we treat our husbands, we should be the trendsetters in this area.

Wives should seek to affirm their husbands daily. Perhaps he didn't take out the trash, but did he work all day?  Being met at the door with thank you for providing for your family, instead of why didn't you do what I asked goes a long way. Our husbands aren't perfect but neither are they married to perfect wives. Give them the grace that you desire to be given.

If our children hear us belittle their dads, they will lose respect for dads. It can be as little as saying your dad never does what I ask or a much bigger complaint. It can be something they overhear you say to a friend. Anytime they hear you complaining about their father to them or someone else they lose respect not just for their Dad, but other men as well. If you have an issue take it up with him in a discreet setting, not in front of the kids.

If our daughters grow up hearing us disrespect their fathers they will look for a man who does not deserve their respect, someone who is an easy target. If our sons grow up hearing us disrespect their dad, they will grow up thinking men, including themselves do not deserve respect.

Thank you for allowing me this Father's Day to get on my soap box. I am blessed with a Godly man who is a great father to our children. And this Father's Day I was blessed to spend it with my wonderful father. The first time in 10 years. Happy Father's Day!

  1. Great post! As women we know how we want to be treated, cherished. Men long to be respected. We should keep in mind none are perfect and we can't wait until perfection to lift each other up. There are huge rewards and benefits when we CHOOSE to find value in each other and focus on those good things.
